There’s a reason stew season and autumn arrive together. As the evenings close in and the temperature drops, a pot simmering on the hob is exactly what the family table needs: warming, nourishing and, more often than not, better the next day. This month’s meal plan is built entirely around it: seven stews for four or more, leaning on budget-friendly ingredients that go a long way.
These recipes have been carefully selected by our editors to show just how much range a stew can have. Beans do the heavy lifting throughout, keeping costs down, fibre up and bellies full, while punchy, smoky spices carry the flavours of the week. Two of the recipes serve four to six, so leftovers are very much part of the plan; both keep well in the fridge for a couple of days and make a brilliant ready-made lunch.
The week brings a peanut-rich chicken stew, a vegan curried bean stew, a rich fish and chorizo stew, a punchy Cajun sausage stew, a low-cal pancetta and white bean stew, a slow-cooked spiced lamb stew, and a smoky beef and black bean stew with cornbread dumplings — a lineup that covers every mood of the season.
Our recipes are designed to be adaptable. Where possible, we’ll flag simple swaps and tips to help you get even more from your weekly shop.
To keep things simple, use the in-app shopping list to add ingredients from each recipe, then check the My Good Food tab for one clear, organised list before you shop.
